Sunday was International Women’s Day which is a day to not only shine a light on the continued fight for equality but also a time to reflect on the pioneers who have paved the way, setting examples for women everywhere in often male-dominated fields. While photography, particularly landscape and nature photography, tends to be highly dominated by men, talented women around the globe are changing the game and inspiring people everywhere with their art. If your Instagram feed needs some woman power, you should definitely give these ladies a follow. Here are 15 women photographers who are changing the game. 

Danielle da Silva

Danielle is a photographer, filmmaker and speaker and CEO of Photographers Without Borders, as well as the co-founder of the Sumatran Wildlife Sanctuary. You’ll see a lot of honest portrait work and wildlife photography in Danielle’s profile that aims to tell stories and connect us with nature and other beings on this planet. 

 

Erin Hogue

To be a winter sports photographer, you have to be willing to push the limits, which is exactly what Erin Hogue excels at. From snowmobiling in Whistler to camping in Alaska, to repelling down cliffs or hanging out of a helicopter, Erin is dedicated to getting the snot, no matter what. With an impressive collection of awards under her belt, she’s turning heads in the winter sports photography arena. Lina Kayser

Lina is a talented nature and landscape photographer from our neighbour town down the road, Bergen, Norway. As one of the rainiest cities in Norway, Lina used to dread winter until she stopped holding out for sunny days and golden hours and instead, embraced the fog and portray the dramatic moodiness found in the Norwegian Mountains. She runs tours specializing in cold and remote places in the north showcasing the fragile Arctic life. 

Re Wikstrom

Re Wikstrom has mountain biked in Canada, rafted along the Idaho-Oregon border, ski toured in the Arctic and travelled to many a wild place --and all alongside strong, inspiring women. Her mission is close to her heart: to use photography to bring female athletes to the forefront of the outdoor world. She is one of few female action sports photographers and the only one who dedicates 100% of her personal work to shooting with women. Ashley Noel 

Ashley Noel is the photographer behind @nyroamer and has a distinct knack for capturing cityscapes and street shots in her home town of NYC and across the globe. Her photos show you can find beauty in almost any surrounding if you look closely enough. She often uses black and white to accentuate the shadows and light in the city.  

 

Charly Savely

Charly Savely is a jack of all trades when it comes to photography and if you see her portfolio, you’ll be treated to a mix of portraits, travel, landscapes and wildlife. She has a preference for moody, cold weather and has shifted her photography priorities to help raise awareness about the disappearing Arctic.  

Colleen Gara 

Colleen is a wildlife and nature photographer based in Calgary, Alberta. Her passion lies in photographing wildlife in their natural surroundings, from the Rocky Mountains to the prairies. Colleen hopes that her images will help foster a connection between the viewer and her wild subjects, raising awareness to protect both the animals and their natural habitats.

Kaisa Lappalainen

Kasia is another talented photographer adding diversity and diverse representation to the nature photography field. She fell in love with wildlife photography at the age of 20 when she went on a trip to Tanzania. She joined the Sony Alpha family in 2017 and has been developing her photography ever since. Her work features poignant portraits of wild animals with a few stunning landscapes mixed in for good measure.  

Freya Coursey

Freya Coursey is a wildlife and nature photographer who’s love for nature was so strong she decided to pursue a degree in Zoology. She uses photography as a tool to share her love of wildlife in a world that is increasingly disconnected from nature to help others understand how precious natural ecosystems are.  

Roksolyana Hilevych

Roksolyana is a Ukrainian landscape photographer who thrives in cold environments. She finds her inspiration in nature and focuses on a variety of colours and compositions to create moody and captivating shots. Her work takes her all over the glove from Lofoten, Island to the isolate reaches of Siberia in the depths of winter. 

 

Aurore Alifanti

Aurore’s portfolio is about as diverse as they come ranging from the dancing Aurora Borealis in the Arctic to urban city grids at night. She began her journey into professional full-time photography within the last few years and is currently splitting her time between Barcelona and Paris. Her photos will make you second guess what you love more, vibrant cities or the tranquil backcountry. 

 

 

Dawn Wilson

Dawn is a professional photographer based out of Colorado who specializes in photographing the wildlife of high latitudes and high altitudes of the Rocky Mountains and Alaska. Dawn travels extensively visiting remote locations looking for wildlife to help tell their story and raise awareness about wildlife habitat conservation.
