At Vallerret our mission is to help photographers overcome the challenges of Winter Photography. In doing so, we produce gloves made for endurance with high performance materials to help photographers thrive even in the harshest winter conditions.
We strive to make the best choices for the environment in production, but any way you look at it, production creates pollution.
We are not perfect and while there is a lot of work to be done, we are excited to be taking great steps forwards in our commitment to conduct as responsible and sustainable business practises as possible - and give back.
Here's what we are currently doing:
We are proud to be a certified partner of 1% for the Planet, which is a global organization that connects dollars and doers to accelerate smart environmental giving.
Vallerret annually donates 1% of all sales to support environmental non-profit organizations who work hard to create a healthy and vibrant future for our planet.
In partnership with Aquapak our gloves are protected in bags that are water soluble, ocean safe and biodegradable, breaking down harmlessly to non-toxic biomass in soil and sea.
These protective bags are made from a specially formulated polymer resin using Polyvinylalcohol (PVOH). PVOH is still a polymer, but the major differentiator from traditional plastics is that the material is hydrophilic (i.e. it loves water). This means it breaks down quickly in the marine environment without attracting other toxins or forming microplastics, as traditional polymers would.
We'd like to thank Finisterre for referring us to Aquapak and offer a better way to protect new product without harming soil and sea.
With every pair of gloves you purchase in our webshop, we provide a convenient glove storage bag made from organic linen. This ensures that your gloves remain protected when not in use, and you can also repurpose the bag for storing food produce, such as bread or fruit.
There's no solving climate change without solving deforestation. Each time you buy a product through our website, we will gift you a tree to plant all over the world with help from Tree Nation.
Every Year, we donate Black Friday Profits to The Norwegian Society for Conservation of Nature (Naturvernforbundet), who works to protect nature and the environment so that human activity does not exceed the tolerance limits of our planet.
NSC work to solve a wide range of issues in Norway and protect the majestic & photogenic National Parks, i.e. in Lofoten and Svalbard.
Their focus is on conservation, climate change, energy and transportation.
We are proud Members of The Conservation Alliance. TCA harness the power of businesses and outdoor communities to protect North America’s cherished wild places and outdoor spaces and lobby for solutions that balance the best interests of the land and water, wildlife, and people.
Vallerret is a Supportive Member of Protect Our Winters (POW); a Global nonprofit that helps passionate outdoor people protect the places and lifestyles they love from climate change. They are a community of athletes, scientists, creatives, and business leaders advancing non-partisan policies that protect our world today and for future generations. Through their advocacy, they work to educate, register and turn out enough voters to shift governmental responses to the climate crisis.
We all have a part to play when it comes to sustainability and part of being a sustainable consumer is making sure you get the most out of your products. We are proud of the quality of our gloves and with proper care, they should serve you in your photography adventures for years to come.
Here are our tips for caring for your gloves.
Hand Wash Your Gloves.AndKeep them the far away from the tumble dryer. As the gloves have 100 % merino wool liners, the wool may shrink or twist in the tumble dryer if not handled properly, so don’t take any chances here.
Dry Your Gear. If you’ve been out on a particularly damp photography mission, be sure to hang dry your gloves as soon as you get home to avoid material breakdown and mold.
Cut Your Fingernails. Sound silly? Hear us out! Just like how having long toenails will wear out your socks, having long fingernails will take a toll on your gloves. Our gloves are lined with merino liner which can be delicate. To get the most life out of your gloves, we recommend keeping your nails short to avoid wear and tear to the fingertips.
Only Buy What You Need: Limit Returns & Size Exchanges. We know that shipping our product from country to country takes a toll on our environment. Make sure to consider if you actually want this product and study the sizing chart before you purchase. If you have any questions about the sizing or fit, please don’t hesitate to reach out to Customer Support.
From businesses to individuals, there's always a way to get involved and do better. These are recommendations created by professionals and industry experts to share and use freely. We found it to be a great guide, maybe you will too.
1. Tax yourself. Join 1% For The Planet, and commit to donating 1% of your revenue to environmental nonprofits. You do not have to be a business to do this.
2. Estimate your footprint. Use a 3rd party auditor like 3degrees or Carbonfund.org to estimate your Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions.
3. Offset your footprint. Offsetting your historic carbon emissions and all future emissions surprisingly cheaper and easier than you think. Check out Carbonfund.org and Bonneville Environmental Foundation.
4. Surround yourself with experts. Join the OIA Sustainability Working Group and participate in bi-annual meetings.
5. Become an expert yourself. Read OIA’s Social Responsibility Guide.
6. Look under the hood. Ensure your factories (or the factories of the brands you shop with) prioritize worker safety and pay.
