A photographer's dream, Henningsvær Stadium is a small, unassuming football pitch located in the Lofoten Islands of Norway. But don't let its size fool you—this stadium is one of the most beautiful - thus most photographed - in the world.
Set against a backdrop of towering mountains and surrounded by the sparkling ocean, the pitch is framed by traditional fish-drying racks, adding a unique, rustic charm to the scene. It’s no wonder that Henningsvær Stadium has become a popular destination for photographers from around the globe.
In this blog post, I’ll share some tips on how to capture the best photos of Henningsvær Stadium, as well as some cultural insights into this fascinating part of Norway.
Henningsvær Stadium is located on the island of Hellandsøya, part of the Lofoten Islands. The easiest way to reach the stadium is by car, with a small parking lot conveniently located next to the pitch.
If you don't have access to a car, you can also take a bus from Svolvær, the main town in the Lofoten Islands, to Henningsvær. The bus ride takes about 45 minutes, and it’s a great opportunity to enjoy some of the stunning local scenery along the way.
The best time to photograph Henningsvær Stadium is during the summer months when the weather is warm and sunny. However, it is also breathtaking in winter, when the snow-capped mountains provide a stunning contrast to the surrounding ocean.
No matter when you visit, a few tips will help you get the best photos of this iconic location:
The Lofoten Islands are located in the Norwegian Sea, north of the Arctic Circle. Known for their stunning scenery — towering mountains, rugged fjords, and picturesque fishing villages, and of course a place often blessed with amazing northern lights — the islands are a paradise for landscape & astro photographers and videographers.
The local culture is a rich mix of Norwegian and Sami influences. The Sami, an indigenous people who have lived in the Arctic region for thousands of years, have shaped the cultural landscape of Lofoten alongside more traditional Norwegian practices. The Lofoten Islands today attract visitors not only for their beauty but also for their authentic, local experiences.

While Henningsvær Stadium is captivating year-round, the weather in Lofoten can be unpredictable. Whether you're visiting in summer or winter, dressing appropriately with the right layers is crucial to stay comfortable so you can focus on capturing the perfect shot.
In a region like Lofoten, layering is essential. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer, followed by an insulating mid-layer, and a waterproof outer shell to protect against wind and rain. After your feet are cozy in some Merino Wool Socks, your hands are the most vulnerable parts of your body, especially when using camera gear in cold weather. That's where the Vallerret Photography Gloves come in — designed specifically for photographers and videographers, they allow you to operate your camera while keeping your hands warm. With the right clothing and gloves, you'll be ready to capture the beauty of Henningsvær Stadium comfortably, no matter the conditions.
Much love,
Dave
