The story behind the W’s Nordic Photography glove is a perfect example of how we design in general: we aim to make gloves we’d use ourselves, gloves that we’d personally want to use all day, every day. When we say that this company is run for photographers, by photographers, we mean it!

As we reflected on our first sales season after our Kickstarter campaign, we knew we wanted to expand our glove line, which at the time only consisted of unisex gloves. We knew if we wanted to serve as many photographers as possible, we needed to have gloves for everyone.

The Inspiration for the glove:

The idea for the Nordic all began from our Co-Founder Stine Jorgensen. “Using our photography gloves that first season in our Norwegian backyard, I was always a little envious when I saw how well the gloves fit on Carl’s hands. I personally found the unisex gloves just slightly too wide for my relatively slim hands so I never got that snug fit that I wanted”

Being the go-getter that she is, Stine got to work designing the perfect glove for her own everyday use that would hopefully also fit the bill of other female photographers out there.

The Requirements:

Women photographers
To design the perfect glove, Stine implemented a few requirements. The glove had to be slimmer than our unisex sizes. It needed a little insulation to keep warm day after day in the Norwegian Winter and it also needed to be waterproof. It rains regularly in Stine and Carl’s hometown of Voss during the beginning of winter in Norway so she knew the glove would need to be able to stand up to the elements.

The other requirement? It needed to look cool enough to wear on a regular day. She wanted these gloves to be as useful in her day to day photography as they were in the mountains. Researching color trends with what she personally liked, Stine added a textured light-grey fabric to contrast the black and give it a softer look. For a colour lover, the splash of grey was the perfect balance between adding a pop of colour while still being stylish and discreet.

Add just a touch of home:

The glove design turned very personal for Stine in the process. She was constantly testing with her own experiences and making choices that would fulfill her perfect glove dreams. To finish the glove design, she chose to incorporate a picture of Stine and Carl’s favorite local cabin as the silicon print on the palms providing the non-slip grip featured on all of our gloves.

The cabin is their secret getaway play for those days they really need to unwind far away from the laptops. Far from electricity and modern day conveniences, they often go there to have the raw winter experience that drew them to Norway in the first place. It’s where they run dogs, have campfires and even spot the Northern Lights.

But most of all, that little Norweigan cabin is just is a small reminder of what Vallerret is all about: making gloves that we're proud of that help us love winter even more than we already do.
