Finding the right photography glove is hard, we know. When the weather takes a cold turn, we’re always wishing for the warmth of a glove but we’ve always found gloves too bulky and clumsy when trying to take photos, so this year we’re solving that problem with the updated Skadi Zipper Mitt PSP: glove, mitt, and complete functionality all in one!

This glove is the ultimate piece when it comes to versatility and customizing warmth. With all the benefits of a mitten and the functionality of a glove, the Skadi the two-in-one Mitt and liner allows you to adapt to the conditions so it can be worn the Mitt by itself or use the liner when you need that extra bit of protection and warmth. The glove can be unzipped to reveal all four fingers as well as a flip cap for your thumb making this an ideal glove for videographers or drone operators who especially need to be hands-on when it comes to their craft.

We've talked a lot about the specs of the glove but as with all of our gloves, a lot of care and attention to detail is put into the production. Every stitch has a story, every component has a purpose. Our gloves are made for photographers, by photographers and we designed this glove model in close collaboration with videographer and Vallerret Team Shooter Lukas Riedl.

The Brains Behind the Operation:

Lukas has been a winter bum at heart for as long as he cares to admit. Transitioning from being in front of the camera, to behind and onto videography Lukas loves to pack the gear and use it. From filming backcountry snowboarding to chefs cooking in the winter outdoors, Lukas needs the ultimate of versatility to enable his work and continue to roll that film throughout the coldest of days.

Lukas has been in search of the perfect glove for him that would give him all access and control of his videography gear without having to expose skin to the elements.

“When I’m out shooting I need to work fast with different gear components changing lenses, operating the gimbal, fiddling with microphones, adjusting camera settings and all that. Sometimes I need all my fingers out to operate and other times just my thumb or index” said Lukas. “I wanted to develop a design that could help me stay warm even when I need to use all my fingers and I’m so pumped with the result – it’s just awesome”

The brown/camo colour is Lukas’ design and we’re so excited to add a little colour to our glove range and line up. And for those who are wondering, yes, the doodle on the bottom is Lukas’ signature. (It’s a pretty doodle, don’t get us wrong!)

It's all in the details:

We designed the glove to zip open to reveal all four fingers underneath. The Skadi also comes with an included Polartec Power Stretch Pro liner for extra durability and warmth. The Power Stretch Pro Liner, from Blue Sign Certified materials, features panels on the back of the hand protect you from wind and the index finger and thumb are touch screen compatible so you can access your touchscreens without being exposed to the elements.

The Skadi Zipper Mitt PSP is lined with a merino wool lining to give you extra warmth and softness when wearing the glove without the Polartec Power Stretch Pro liner. Of course, the zipper and FlipTech finger caps with magnets remain a staple in the Skadi Zipper Mitt PSP ensuring you have complete and easy access to your camera and dials.

The outer materials feature goat leather, laminated soft twill and a 2 ply DWR suede which resists water and gives excellent wind protection. The Skadi Zipper Mitt PSP also features a super grippy palm to give you confidence and a great camera grab. A handy storage pocket on the back of the hand is perfect for storing a spare SD card or microfibre cloth and comes embedded with a handy tripod key. The Skadi Zipper Mitt PSP also features a storm leash so you can drop the gloves in an instant without the fear of losing them forever in the powder.

Skadi Zipper Mitt Photography Glove Sketches

For a long time during the design process and prototyping, this glove was nicknamed “The gLover” and it was in the late stages of finalizing the design that we landed on the name.

Behind the name Skadi:

“Skadi” (spelled Skaði) in tribute to the goddess of winter in Norse mythology. Skadi is a jötunn and goddess associated with bowhunting, skiing, winter, and mountains. She was raised on a snowy mountaintop where heavy clouds hid the sun and the hard rock made the ground feel dead cold. She felt at home in her wild and inhospitable land where nothing would thrive or grow, and her love for the cold would become a point of division in her marriage to Njord, god of the sea who found her environment too cold and harsh.

While we all shared Skadi’s love of winter, not everyone was quick to adopt the name for the new glove. For a long time during the design process and prototyping, this glove was nicknamed “The gLover” and it was in the final stages of finishing the design that we landed on the name Skadi.

“I thought gLover was a great name,” admits Lukas, “I’m still secretly voting for it. It’s a glove and I love it. Glover!”

The Skadi Zipper Mitt PSP is designed to be the ultimate versatile glove for Winter photographers/videographers with different needs on the same shoot. We’re excited to have teamed up with Lukas to design a truly lovable glove that will make you feel like the winter goddess Skadi herself.
